She is a health researcher, educator, and midwife who has conducted research in maternal and newborn care, midwifery, and infant feeding for more than 40 years, and whose work has helped to shape public health and maternity policy, practice, and education nationally and internationally. Her work focusses on improving health and wellbeing, the quality of care, reducing the impact of inequalities, and evidence-informed policy and practice. She has advised governments and global organisations and has been invited to present her work in more than 25 countries. She founded the multidisciplinary Mother and Infant Research Unit, which she led for 25 years. She was principal investigator for the groundbreaking global Lancet Series on Midwifery, and was Lead Adviser to the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council for the radical new regulatory standards for midwives. Dr Andrew Symon (Senior Lecturer @University of Dundee) Andrew Symon is a senior lecturer in the Mother and Infant Research Unit at the University of Dundee in Scotland. He qualified as a midwife in 1986 and has worked in both Scotland and Kenya. Since 2014 he has been the co-ordinator for the MSc Midwifery / MSc Maternal and Infant Health. Since 2016 he has also been working on developing the Quality Maternal and Newborn Care (QMNC) Framework as a data collection tool – first as a qualitative tool, and more recently as a survey. He has presented this research in several countries, including a keynote address in Germany. Andrew is a Fellow of the European Academy of Nursing Science and a member of the International Congress of Midwives’ Research Advisory Network. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Technology, Sydney and has also been a Visiting Professor at the Federal University of Ceara in Brazil. Cindy L Farley (Professor @Georgetown University) Cindy L. Farley, CNM, PhD, FACNM, studied midwifery at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. She earned her BSN and PhD from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA. She has worked clinically in a variety of birth settings. She is a Professor at Georgetown University, Washington, DC, USA, in the Nurse-Midwifery/ Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) programs. She is co-editor of Clinical Practice Guidelines for Midwifery and Women’s Health, an American Journal of Nursing 2022 book of the year, and of Prenatal and Postnatal Care: A Woman Centered Approach. Dr. Farley has been instrumental in organizing groups of midwifery and WHNP students to visit their federal legislators and advocate for positive change in important maternal health policies and legislation. She has contributed to global health efforts in Honduras, Guatemala, Haiti, Liberia, and Tanzania. Jalana Lazar (Adjunct Professor @Georgetown University) Jalana Lazar CNM, MPH, MPhil, FACNM, is a midwife and full-time PhD student and visiting lecturer in Midwifery at City, University of London in the Centre for Maternal and Child Health. The focus of her PhD research is on the experience of midwives facilitating group antenatal care. She is involved in research projects around the global expansion and implementation of group antenatal care in both high and low and middle income countries, developing and conducting group antenatal care training, materials and resources in both virtual and in-person formats. She worked for 12 years as a full scope midwife and nurse practitioner in the United States, with a special focus on underserved populations and group antenatal care. She also has a background as a public health educator, specializing in sexual and reproductive health, and is a midwifery educator on faculty at Georgetown University. She serves on local and national committees of the American College of Nurse Midwives. Tanya Tringali (Clinical Faculty Advisor @Georgetown University) Tanya Tringali earned her BSN from New York University and her MS in Midwifery from Philadelphia University. She is currently adjunct faculty at NYU and Georgetown University and is the owner and founder of Mother Wit Maternity & Consulting Services. Mother Wit was created to fill the existing gaps within the healthcare system, starting with an emphasis on fitness, nutrition, education and strong relationships between midwives and clients. She designed a virtual yet extremely comprehensive postpartum program that has been evolving and is increasingly being utilized by healthcare consumers as an adjunct to in person care for all stages of life including primary care, gynecology, preconception and prenatal care. Liane MacPherson (Midwife Laborist @Marinhealth Maternity Unit) Liane MacPherson is Canadian by birth and upbringing, trained in midwifery in England, and returned to the United States to live and practice. She earned her Masters in Midwifery at Philadelphia University and her Doctorate of Nursing Practice at Georgetown University. She has been honored for her outstanding clinical care by clients and colleagues. Her DNP project on laborist care is an important step in bringing midwifery care to more women in the hospital setting. She steps into leadership roles that foster the betterment of health and social conditions for all people, particularly childbearing people. Elisabeth Jones (DNP student @Georgetown University) Lizi Jones, BA, BSN, RN, is a Student Nurse-Midwife/Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and Doctor of Nursing Practice student at Georgetown University. Originally from the East Coast, Lizi has lived in Anchorage, Alaska for the past five years. She holds a BSN from the University of Pennsylvania and a BA in English and Classics from Northwestern University, where she wrote her thesis on the role of magic, parenthood, and rebirth in Ovid’s Medea and Shakespeare's "The Tempest." Her doctoral studies have included work on the role of smokeless tobacco in gastroschisis incidence in Alaska Native Mothers and perinatal mood and anxiety disorder screening in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. When she is not in clinic or class, Lizi may be found skiing or running the trails around Anchorage, making and showing hand-carved block prints under the moniker Wild Braid Studio, volunteering for reproductive justice organizations, and exploring the Alaska wilds.
